IASC’s summer swim team is our most popular program, and people who’ve been IASC swimmers will tell you that it’s a cornerstone memory of growing up in the neighborhood. Summer swimming is a rec sport focused on fun and participation as much as it is about growing as an athlete.
Eligibility: Per league rules, only members of the swim club can participate in swim team, through age 18. There is a fee for participation. Swimmers need to be able to swim one length of the pool by Time Trials in mid-June. If your swimmer can’t do this yet, we encourage you to talk to the coaches. There are a lot of beginner swimmers every year and parents are always surprised at how quickly they progress from practices starting in mid-May to Time Trials in mid-June.
Competition: Summer swim team focuses on fun and participation. We have seven dual meets against other northern clubs from late June to late July. For the faster swimmers that qualify, there is a post season meet series that ends when they’re eliminated. For developing swimmers, we have non-scoring exhibition heats so that everyone gets a chance to swim at meets, and there is a consolation meet (B-Champs) after the dual meet season. All swimmers receive ribbons after each event and there is an awards ceremony at the end of the season.
The season:
- Mid May: Practices start in the evening
- Mid June: Time Trials
- Late June: Practices move to the morning when Shoreline Schools are out for the summer
- Late June: Dual meets begin (Seven meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings)
- July 4th break: There is often a weeklong break, and it’s a great time to book a family vacation or camp!
- Late July: Klahaya is typically our final dual meet
- Late July: Post-season meets. If your swimmer qualified for the prelims and the championship bracket, their season continues. Our developing athletes can swim in B-Champs (the consolation bracket)
- Early August: The season always ends on the first Wednesday in August. All City is on Tuesday and the team banquet is on Wednesday
Social: The pool is a natural social hub during the summer but we have an assortment of activities that are popular with kids. Our 8 & Under swimmers are paired with a 13 & Up swimmer who brings them treats and looks after them during swim meets. For parents, “swimgating” or working volunteer roles on summer evenings is a great way to meet your neighbors.
